Emmy The Great - Edward EP (First Songs)

Emmy The Great, a singer-songwriter from London has clocked up many great support slots with the likes of highly acclaimed Martha Wainwright and Jamie T amongst others. 2009 sees the release of her latest ep Edward EP (first songs), a collection of songs written early in her career but only recently revisited and recorded.

It would be fitting if these songs sounded immature or even dated, after all they were written early in Emmys career but that however just isn't the case. From the moment Edward Is Deadwood reaches your ears, you realise that Emmy The Great is a gem that you've probably been missing out on with Edward Is Deadwood containing the same sort of upbeat nu-folk feel that you could find in a Laura Marling song and we all know of the dizzying heights she has reached and that is where Emmy deserves to be if she continues this level of high quality output.

Acoustic singer songwriter types can fall into the depths of being a bit samey, floating along the same ideas and tempo. By the second track, Bowl Collecting Blood you realise that this isn't going to be the case with Emmy The Great, its sombre guitar involving you in a melancholy story of angst very different to the first track and in fact any other on the cd making it the eps standout track.

Emmy The Great has honestly surprised me. This release is honest, involving, mature and deserves to be selling out in all good record stores.
