Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

Rating: 4/5

Porcupine Tree, a band that can't be pigeonholed due to their diverse sound, return with their latest release, 'Deadwing' a stunning, mostly conceptual piece. The music ranges from psychedelic chill out - ala Pink Floyd - to perfect hard rock, to sublime progressive rock. It's quite possibly the finest release of the year so far, and is certainly up to the same quality as previous releases. Steve Wilson has astounded his fanbase by releasing both 'Deadwing' and his Blackfield project's album in such a short time space - showing once again that he's a great songwriter with almost limitless creativity.

'Deadwing' certainly takes a few listens to uncover its potential; but the journey is well worth it. The only fault to be found in it is the 'tacking on' of the older hit 'shesmovedon', which whilst it is an excellent version, doesn't quite fit in with the overall feel of the album.

Buy this album now; it's the best rock album by a long way from 2005, and a certain contender for album of the year. Hear it, and revel in Steve Wilson's natural songwriting skill.
