The Somatics - Dynamo Mercurial

After the loss of the dear, bonkers Syd Barrett, it's comforting to know that his legacy is being carried on. Bearing the torch today are The Somatics, a Leeds trio who make atmospheric, lush, psych-pop that the Crazy Diamond himself would be proud of. Their new album features tracks like the 16-minute epic “The Lost Weekend” as well as the concise, affecting “Rebound,” both delivered with a detached and melancholy aura most reminiscent of the classic Piper at the Gates of Dawn. While occasionally overwhelming, Dynamo Mercurial reassures us that “prog,” that most dreaded of genres, is alive, well, and even important.
