Dark Sparks - We Are Just Flies
Owain Paciuszko 29/05/2009
Rating: 3/5
There's a hint of Kula Shaker to the guitar sound that opens We Are Just Flies that bursts into a 70s-funk-rock, on this fun pop number. Lead vocalist Leigh Greenwood delivers the chorus's refrain well whilst bass player/backing vocalist Simon Green brings an entertaining falsetto to the mix.
B-side Crying in the Spotlight begins by sounding like the old Cadbury's Flake adverts, before turning into a post-punk-ish number with a touch of the 80s sound. It feels like a contender for the soundtrack to a remake of The Lost Boys, with synths and echoing vocals jostling against the spiky indie guitar riffs.
There's not too much of note going on here, but lead-track We Are Just Flies is a fun and initially striking single that suggests Dark Sparks have a bit more invention than what they've served up on this little offering.
