Hi-Def TV - Leave Behind

Rating: 4/5

Closely whispered vocals come in over sweet acoustic guitar, in a fashion similar to James Yorkston on this beguiling EP from Londoner Hi-Def T.V. Lead track Leave Behind has a sparkling, bittersweet folk-blues sound with a soft and compelling vocal akin to Gomez's Ian Ball.

River's Gold follows a similar trend, with guitars being plucked and scratched, and the song itself bares a structural and straightforward similarity to the post-Smog work of Bill Callahan. Whilst closing track From My Side is a quiet, optimistic number sung mournfully about heading out on a journey, where you can almost hear the sunrise in the music. Though the song itself is strangely, disappointingly slight.

This is a tender and charming release from a promising singer-songwriter, the songs themselves are well crafted, beautifully played and sung and never outstay their welcome, if occasionally having their wings clipped before fully taking flight.
