Loz Jones - Idiot Room

With a sleazy catchy synth intro followed by a wall of guitars you could be mistaken at first for thinking this is a nice, shiny remaster of a vintage Super Furry Animals track. Whilst Loz, lead singer of this Luton based six-piece, doesn't have a voice as remarkable as Gruff Rhys he does have a track as fun as some of the Welsh outfit's better, recent output. Idiot Room kind of does what it says on the tin, it is a very simple song, but it's buoyant and quirky and likable.

B-side Awaking Times puts female vocalist Lucy at the fore, and has a space-age acoustic feel, ending up sounding a bit like some of The Shortwave Set's slower numbers. Melding a traditional pop sound with some ecelctic percussion pleasantly. However neither track manages to quite find that alchemy to transform what is pretty good into pretty great, and each song - though listenable - feels a little short of coming into its own.
