Venus Mischiefs - B & H

Owain Paciuszko 26/07/2009

Rating: 3/5

Indie rock that begins like early Radiohead, jangling guitars, spattering cymbals, before launching itself into territory more similiar to The Music, with half-spoken lyrics and a dancefloor friendly beat. Whilst the music remains consistent, infectious, the lyrics flow around the music with stream-of-consciousness abandon, kind of like a club remix of an experimental The Cure track.

B-side Russian Bar has a similar dance combo of drums and bass, with the vocals coming in slow and breathy, with the whole thing falling somewhere between Modest Mouse and The Rapture. It's a bit more tried and tested than the lead track, but still a foot-stapping, indie night friendly number that seems deserving a decent mainstream exposure. And, as artificial as that may seem, that's how the band seem to come across on these two tracks, as a group aware of how to put together a track that can get people dancing.
