The Sailplanes - Books About Cities

Rating: 4/5

Four tracks of taut, unsettling, unusually cinematic art-rock that conjure up black and white dreams of knife-wielding girls and breathless chases down narrow streets in some romantic old European capital. Tim and Stacey trade urgent vocals, wiry guitars tangle and tussle and a passing Sonic Youth wind down their window, peer over their shades and murmur approval before heading off to all buy fur coats.

Downsides are limited merely to Stacey's thin voice and a slight lack of meat on the bones of the three-piece's bassless sound, otherwise this exciting release comes highly recommended. Any indie labels fondling a heavy 'spare cash' tin - and Domino, Franz are raking it in damn you - should certainly start looking this way.
