Attention Thieves - EP

There are some positives to Attention Thieves, not least of all is their self-deprecating humour that peppers their lengthy press release, however this tongue-in-cheek, wry, erudite attitude hasn't quite managed to infect their music. Opening track Number One Thing starts off like so many indie bands of late and continues along a predictable track, it bares strong similarities to the recent releases of Foo Fighters - the lighter, poppier ones - and I found them disappointing even from the might Dave Grohl. Lead singer Alex Green does demonstrate, near the track's close, some of the reasons why he also fronts metal band The Arusha Accord.

This four-piece are good at what they do, and confess that they are 'very much a live band', where I can imagine these tracks going down far better than they do on record. From My Reach has some nice guitar interplay that kind of recalls a lighter version of Rocket From The Crypt's On A Rope covered by The Automatic. Fear To Lose has a nice, finality to it's driving melody and finds Green going a bit Enter Shikari, and it's a pretty good end to a record that seems to capture the sound of a band heading towards a musical destination rather than having found their feet.
