The Low Edges - Low Edges Demo

In 1966 when England won the World Cup their victory was sound-tracked by the likes of Frank Sinatra's Strangers in the Night, the Kinks' Sunny Afternoon and the Beatles' Paperback Writer (all number one hits during the course of “our boys'” epic campaign). Just shy of 40 years on and Shadwell/New Cross upstarts the Low Edges are reviving this sun-drenched, champagne soaked era with the smooth and effortless swagger found in their two song demo.

First song 'Girl and the Gun', with its Kinks-esque blend of cool and cheekiness, evokes images of the corrupt MET in league with the gangsters of Soho. Sex Shops, Strip Joints, seedy men with even seedier intentions and working girls' ready to rob their punters of all their money at gunpoint, luring them to the rocks like sirens with false promises of sexual abandon.

Second song the Dreamer, rather than going for a Ray Davies inspired vibe instead lends it's inspiration from fellow 60s idol Donovan as we are treated to a short and hazy burst of nonchalance with vocals as seductive as they are dulcet. A song that could lull to sleep even the most wired of 'legitimate London businessmen'.

As I am concluding this review and listening to the demo I also have the England game on the telly. We are thumping the Northern Irish 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Maybe this aural throwback to '66 that's sound-tracking my viewing of England's rout of the Ulstermen is indicative of something? Maybe me might lift the trophy in Germany 2006? Let's hope so! And let's hope that the Low Edges continue their songwriting progress and write the score for our gallant victory!
