GodisintheTV 07/12/2009

2009 another year of highs and lows, recession and floods, war and G20 riots, a year that saw the emergence of twitter which depending upon your viewpoint is the greatest social networking tool to have graced our screens with its presence, to others it represented a dumbing down of blogs suiting those with an attention deficit disorder that doesn't stretch beyond one hundred and forty characters, still at least you could follow Stephen Fry eh? Eminem returned, Glasto saw the reformation of Blur, while the boutique (Latitude, Bestival, ATP et al) and city (ITC, SWN) festival exploded. Then the real shocker Michael Jackson the king of pop passed away greatly saddening those that remember him at his brilliant best, it perhaps marked the end of a era in popular music and maybe the beginning of a new one where labels and global megastars are lessened in favour of those artists with inventiveness, acts that can reconnect with their fan bases in increasingly interesting ways? We can but hope eh?

09 was meant to be the year of the girl but while Florence and her Machine did her best to fly the flag for Britain after damp squibs from La Roux and Little Boots, Lady Gaga revealed her poker face and it was she and Beyonce that created most of the pop spectacles that mattered in 09. JLS proved you didn't need to win the Xfactor to really prevail, some bands shifted into the mainstream while others concentrated on their craft and all the while there was some great music being made and released just below the surface so lift up the stone look under and choose your TOP FIVE from our TOP short listed albums of 2009. A list that includes some highly commercial releases, some massively surprising comeback album triumphs, some cult releases, some barely known ones, plucked from a range of genres, from across the United Kingdom, North America and beyond, no focus groups or commercial pressures here, just a love of the long players that really moved our bodies and our souls in the past year. So get voting!
