Paul Cook 29/06/2010

2010 marks the tenth anniversary of the Summer Sundae Weekender at Leicester's DeMontfort Hall and with a lineup of fresh, established and eclectic acts, it promises to be the best yet. The festival kicks off on the 13th August where over 80 music and comedy acts will take to the stages over three days. GIITTV is here to give you a comprehensive guide to all the entertainment on offer and the must-see acts of the best value weekend ticket around.

About the Festival

The Summer Sundae Weekender began in 2001 as an intimate and family-oriented event across two-stages in one day. The stages have multiplied, the crowds have increased and the festival has established itself as one of the best, family-friendly festivals for your money.

The festival has enjoyed critical and festival-goer popularity every year with its friendly, inviting and chilled out atmosphere proving popular with music lovers across the country. In 2006, when the likes Belle & Sebastian, Elbow, Gomez and a young up-and-coming Jamie T. graced the Summer Sundae stages, the festival was voted Best Small Festival at the UK festival awards.

Headliners

Seasick Steve, Mumford & Sons and Tinchy Stryder

For years festivals have been pure-bred rock and indie events, but with an increasing demand to experience rap, jazz, folk, hip-hop and pop in a live environment, festivals have begun to change. The likes of Glastonbury and the 02 Wireless Festival have flourished with the inclusion of urban and alternative acts and The Summer Sundae Weekender has made effective use of such eclecticism.

This year's headliners Seasick Steve, Mumford & Sons and Tinchy Stryder will bring folk, country, rock and R'n'B to the mixed and diverse lineup. Seasick Steve, an infamous festival act for his no-barriers, audience-inclusive atmosphere, will no doubt bring a once-in-a-lifetime music experience to the weekend. Following a rapid rise to fame Tinchy Stryder will bring the urban flavour to the festival whilst Mumford & Sons' indie folk sounds and unique vocals will be a feel good finale to the weekend as they headline the Sunday.

More Mainstagers

The eclectic mix continues as the main stage at this year's Summer Sundae Weekender brings pop, rock and indie together all in one place.

The Sunshine Underground will grace the stage on the Saturday with their anthemic, angular material from their three studio albums to date, including the latest long-player Nobody's Coming to Save You.

The Sunday main stage band-to-see must be Local Natives. Gorilla Manor, the band's debut album is a beautiful, harmonious album of smooth vocals and uplifting drum rolls. On-stage the band are a delight too and will be a fantastic crowd-warmer before Sunday's headliners Mumford & Sons arrive.

The folk pop duo Turin Brakes will be on hand midway through the band list on the Friday to play a typically melancholic and mellowing acoustic tinged set.

Diana Vickers and The Go! Team will play the Saturday bringing pop and electro to the main stage crowd before Tinchy Stryder plays the headline slot.

Fanfarlo (above) are amongst the GIITTV favourites playing this years Summer Sundae Weekender and will no doubt be one of the bands that music fans discover at the festival and fall in love with. Emotive vocals and sing-a-long choruses will help the band make a real name for themselves on this years festival circuit, starting with the Summer Sundae Weekender.

Other Acts on the main stage over the weekend include Teenage Fanclub, Stornaway, Charlie & The Martyrs, Autohype, Gaggle, The Low Anthem, Junip, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit and These Furrows.

The Indoor Stage

The Indoor Stage is where The Summer Sundae Weekender Festival began back in 2001. Since then, year-on-year, the festival has gone from strength to strength expanding in size, stages and status amongst the UK's best festivals. 2010 builds on this with a host of fantastic musical acts on offer.

The Indoor Stage will be headlined this year by Roots Manuva (Friday), The Fall (Saturday) and The Futureheads once again demonstrating the festival's taste for musical mixture and diversity. Roots Manuva will no doubt deliver his distinct rap/dub lyrics whilst The Fall will bring over 30 years of experience and nostalgia to the festival. The final day will see The Futureheads playing a mix of old and new material, from Hounds of Love to recent material from new album The Chaos.

More on the Indoor Stageā€¦

GIITTV-favourites pepper the Indoor Stage at this years Summer Sundae Weekender with Frightened Rabbit and Los Campesinos! likely to electrify the crowd and get them well and truly warmed up for Saturday's headliner The Futureheads.
