Alex Yau 07/02/2011

GIITTV's Alex Yau meets Tennessean soulstress Lauren Pritchard and delves deeper into her history in musical theatre, her relocation to London, and her music.

You used to be in musical theatre before becoming a musician. Do you inject the same amount of emotion into your singing as you do with theatre, or more?

I think more but it's very different.

Would you say performing in both musicals and as a solo musician draws many similarities and differences?

I would but at the end of the day it's performing in one form or the other no matter what. But I find especially doing a musical, even though it's the same thing everyday, it's more challenging than doing a gig.

Have you ever thought of injecting musical theatre into your solo shows?

I like to keep them separate because they are two different parts of my life.

Was it a hard choice abandoning musical theatre for your career now?

Before when I was doing shows, I wanted to do what I was doing now and after spending a couple of years being totally engrossed in the shows, I missed the time spent on my own music.

How has settling in London been for you? Would you say settling in the UK and leaving the US has affected your musical influence?

I think it's influenced the writing because I was in the UK by myself. All that time spent myself, gave me the prospective that I needed. I've adjusted really well to the UK, I really love it. I lived in New York for a few years but I prefer London. It's less
hectic than New York.

Where do you like to hang out in London?

It depends really. I like the Hayward Gallery which on the river and I love going there when I can. I've really been trying to get back into cooking, I love to cook. There are a couple of bars in the Bethnal Green area that I enjoy.

What is it about the UK that you love so much?

I think it's a few things. The first and main attraction was history and being in a place with so much history was the main attraction. I think it's a beautiful country, I don't mind the weather. It does rain a lot but it doesn't bother me. I feel at home and I always have. It's a comforting feeling.

If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?

At the moment it would be Cairo, or just Egypt in general mostly because I always wanted to go. There are loads of things I want to see and just spend like a month there.

Wasted in Jackson is a song about escaping home and entering the greatunknown, do you ever get nostalgic thoughts about returning home?

Yes, definitely and quite a lot. I haven't lived at home in seven years which is a along time. The more time that I'm not there, the more nostalgic I do get. I'm very close with my family all the time. I miss them all. The song was written about what I wanted to do with my life.

Lauren Pritchard releases her next single 'Stuck' on Feb 28th.
