Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Duchess Says

Lorna Ramsey 08/12/2009

It was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' first time in Newcastle and you could tell people had been waiting for this day for a long time. The show sold out and the place was full earlier than it usually is, meaning the support act, Duchess Says, got quite a big audience. Another female fronted band, Duchess Says were not just content with singing on the stage; their singer went into the crowd and danced with the audience before making her way over to the bar mid-song and ordering a drink.
The lights went down for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but it was another couple of minutes before they walked on stage. After only her voice being heard from backstage Karen O bounded onto stage dressed in a florescent painted poncho and cape; everything you'd expect from her, really. Following her arrival on stage they burst into Heads Will Roll and the energy all three of them had for their songs didn't waver all night. Confetti was blasted out of cannons, much to the annoyance of security who were unimpressed, but the crowd loved it. After that Karen O made her way towards the crowd and got the whole of the front row to sing along with her on the track Cheated Hearts.
Their set was mostly filled with songs off their new album, It's Blitz, naturally. Although songs like Maps, which they've started to play acoustically now, still get a massive sing-along. Finishing with Date with the Night off their debut album, Yeah Yeah Yeahs showed off just why they had sold out the Academy that night.
