Kelis - Bossy

Self-referentialism: the death of an art form? By the time every second goddamn hip-hop track on the radio was about the rapper or crew, you knew the genre had grown fat and lazy, with its main protagonists hogging the limelight but with nothing to say. Sure, a little cockiness goes a long way but when your track is about you, what are you trying to prove, and to who?
Let's ask Kelis: “I'm the bitch y'all love to hate…. I'm the first girl to scream on a track… that's right, I brought all the boys to the yard…”

Hang on, now she's referencing her own songs? Noel Gallagher once mentioned that Liam had written a tune that referred to loads of Oasis songs, line after line, and Noel correctly dismissed it as being the worst, most laughable thing he'd ever heard. Kelis clearly has no such quality
control.

Musically this hooks, clunks and purrs in most of the right places but it feels so damn stagey and self-indulgent that I want to drown either myself or Kelis in a big bag with the cast of Love Island, immediately. Avoid, just so she'll get good again.
