Fanfarlo - Talking Backwards
Dan Round 07/10/2006
Rating: 3/5
Fanfarlo, the project led by London-based Swede Simon Aurell, are a slow paced mix-up of instrumentation - strumming acoustics, jazzy-trumpet breaks and soft-to-brutal drums are all applicable. 'Talking Backwards' is in the orchestral, sweeping-rock, Arcade Fire-mode with swirling keys and piercing dynamics. An affecting, almost vulnerable sounding piece, it draws up comparisons with the likes of Guillemots and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. B-side 'Tuesday (You Come When We Call)' isn't anywhere near as good - a sequenced, more jazzy track, it's pleasant enough for background listening but it doesn't really inspire. Maybe following the A-side was too hard a task, but it does almost flop. Just put 'Talking Backwards' on afterwards and all is redeemed! Surely a promising new talent; hopefully not a one-song act.
