Biffy Clyro - Semi-Mental

James Ainsworth 25/12/2006

Rating: 4/5

This comeback single is perfect evidence of the almost mirror image of Biffy Clyro's career with that of 'Fergie's Fledglings'. Bursting on to the scene were '57' (Paul Scholes), Justboy (David Beckham) '27' (Gary and/or Phil Neville) and all was good with being fresh faced and making quite the impact on the UK scene and showing great promise, drawing plaudits and accolades from all. Forward on a few years later, and you have a third album that is pretentious, pompous, self-indulgent but still ridiculously good, but with only a few noteworthy tracks akin to a Paul Scholes wonder strike. In the present day, fledglings have moved on but are still putting in excellent performances, match-winning tackles and thunderous strikes and Biffy Clyro release 'Semi-Mental'. A glittering and traumatic welcome to the ears that is more reigned in than previous releases and sees tight aggressive vocals dancing an almighty death boogie with more rhythm changes than you can shake a…er, rhythm stick at. Dominance and reliability are back with the kids who popped yesterday, clearly rocking today.
