Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold

Paul Cook 26/02/2007

Rating: 4/5

Opening with a sample from Super tramp's 1979 hit 'Breakfast in America', 'Cupid's Chokehold' soon gets into a smooth swing of indie-rock reggae instrumentals accompanied by the melodic vocals of Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump and strangely silken lyrics of front man Travis McCoy.

Simplistic bass lines and guitar riffs effortlessly complement Travis McCoy's lyrics of true love and despite Patrick Stump's collaboration with the band, which could have ended disastrously, the Fall Out Boy vocalist adds an invaluable chorus to the song, giving a sense of completion to the track.

Gym Class Heroes' #7 'Top 100' release 'Cupid's Chokehold' is a consistent and appetising blend of quality instrumentals and classic, urban-soul-sounding vocals that in essence shouldn't work but does, coming together seamlessly to create yet another successful marriage of indie rock and hip hop.
