Groove Armada - Song 4 Mutya

From the genius that brought the world 'At The River' and 'Superstylin' comes 'Song 4 Mutya', the second single to be lifted from top ten album 'Soundboy Rock'. Featuring ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena, the three and a half minute song is a darker and seedier experience than previous Groove Armada tracks.

Produced to sound Sugababe-ish, the track is not too dissimilar to mid-eighties Prince, dirty bass and heavily compressed double tracked vocals fully inclusive. The problem is however that Mutya's voice remains on pretty much the same 4 or 5 notes throughout, with little room for manoeuvre. If the song is actually for Mutya, there's been little effort to give her vocal talents the space to really excel.

Musically the song does not really travel anywhere and come the entry of the third verse on two and three quarter minutes, there's an unfulfilled expectation that something big is going to take off, but very sadly does not. The song seems an odd-choice for a single; cynically, its the addition of Mutya and her fanbase that the record will rely on if it is to sell enough to hit the top ten, but not even that may be enough to push it even that high.
