The Feeling - I Thought It was Over

The Feeling, well what is there to say? Breezy pop for the summer definitely sums up 'Never Be Lonely', with possibly the most catchy/annoying phrase (depending on your tastes) in indie-pop history and their vocalist's style may have been a precursor to the Lily Allen/Kate Nash style in a very male way. But that's just the boring, 2006 cliché predictable stuff…

"I Thought It Was Over" doesn't exactly catch you by surprise if you know 2006's 'Twelve Stops And Home' with an electro-pop synth opening. However it may just be a possible reference to the time-period it's written about - a love song set in 1989, the year the Berlin Wall fell and the end to the Soviet Union - and not another repeat of their debut in their peculiarly titled forthcoming album “Join With Us” (Released: 18/02/08)

Lead singer Dan Gillespie Sells emphasises the settings from the outset with the opening line “You were there when the wall came down”. Dan has said he remembers the feeling “that the world had turned a corner and that there would be nothing to fear anymore” when the Soviet Union ended, but adds: “That feeling didn't last very long”.

From the offset, it is obvious to tell that lyrically and musically The Feeling are very inspired by Queen and David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust era, and this is represented in the futuristic (in a very 70s sense of the word) sound. The main lyrical tag of the song “I thought it was over but it's not” seems to be overused quite often, and far too much for basic pop songs. However, the musical arrangements back it up by demonstrating a lot of terrific bursts of guitar and keyboards. Still, if you're not already a fan or reminiscing of eye-spangled days of space-gazing and stadium rock of the 70s and 80s, it's doubtful you'll be inspired to learn more about the East/West Germany divide…

Still, if you are a Feeling fan (and no, not in that way…) you'll be happy to hear about their forthcoming March tour, tickets are on sale now…
