Goyte - Hearts A Mess

The swooning, slow groove that opens this new single from Australian sample wrangler Gotye has a certain Portishead-feel to it, but the lyrics and vocals are the stumbling blocks here, whereas Beth Gibbon's vocal would feel like an organic part of the arrangement, here Gotye's voice feels at odds with the music, often out-of-place as if drafted in from a different piece of drab ambient music. It's a strange choice for a single, stripped down from the hard-going six minute album version and lacking the delightful pizzaz of other tracks such a 'Learnalilgivinanlovin' where the music and vocals - though striving to emulate Motown - work perfectly. 'Hearts A Mess' on the other hand is a very bland affair and the lame remixes do very little to correct this.
