The Rakes - That’s The Reason

'That's The Reason' the second single taken from Klang is a flat effort from The Rakes. A tired admittance that the well has run dry, for all the talk post-Ten New Messages of the band scampering away to Berlin to get inspired, just maybe we expected a little more because certainly '1989' the first single from Klang provided no fireworks.

It's a pity; you can hear the wariness in Alan Donohoe's voice, almost as if he's on the verge of giving up his rock and roll dream and getting a 22 grand job. Tired jerky guitars that could belong to any sorta-alrite-indie-band-of-the-noughties pepper the song; this is The Rakes phoning it in. 'That's The Reason' is repetitive, and easy to forget.

In a time where a handful of good singles carry more credence than a solid album it is disappointing how The Rakes have lost the knack of writing a stand out tune. It looks as though the band have run out of ideas, a band supposedly literate and fashion conscious, a band usually wry in their observations and handy with the metaphor don't seem to have anything left.
