Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Going Down
Toby Rogers 06/02/2006
Rating: 2/5
Maybe it's the wind in Chicago that fuels Fall Out Boy's angst. Or maybe they still haven't forgiven Santa for forgetting the GI Joe's they wanted for Christmas when they were nine. Whatever. Patrick Stump and his gang have the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Sugar, We're Going Down is limp emo masturbation fantasy for every spotty urchin who's parents don't understand him. “A loaded gun complex, cock it and pull it” whines the refrain over the top of the tinniest of sub-grunge guitars. Swapping Blink-182's comedy punk for brow-furrowed earnestness, Fall Out Boy miss the point of post-Nirvana US guitar pop.
It's already stormed into the Billboard top ten and made the number 1 slot on MTV's TRL, but what do you expect? If your daddy didn't buy you a pony and you still hold a grudge then you'll probably love it. In reality, though, you should steer well clear. Kurt Cobain didn't die for this.
