Blabbermouth - I Return

Rating: 3.5/5

Don't confuse this with the metal website or everybody is gonna fall out! This particular Blabbermouth is a guy who goes by the real name of Steve Thompson, a crooning folkster from London town.

I Return is a bare number, with just acoustic guitar and a few strings to prop up the vocals. But the man has a voice on him and so to place other musical clutter in the way would do him a disservice. He sings of distress with abandoned immunity and both this and the lyrics provoke analogy with Leonard Cohen; “And so I return back to the grave but don't ponder on me, you've got to set yourself free, I'm just a sad cold spirit”. It leaves you chilled and stimulated at the same time.

Backup track is Death Of A Songwriter, which, despite the title, is more uplifting. Again, an acoustic number with a good melody that is carried along by the strength of Thompson's vocals. Overall this is a sophisticated and poignant release. His debut album “My Dancing Heart” was released at the tail end of 2007 so this single hopefully marks the arrival of the follow-up very soon. Worth a listen.
