KOF - Famous

The accompanying press release makes it explicit that Kof is different to all those rappers who spit negative lyrics; he somehow manages to fall into another common trap, and makes a track that talks about another thing that too many rappers reference…. Fame. So what we have is a rap song that dreams about becoming number one (Tinchy Stryder has seemingly covered this ground already in 2009) and getting on the A-List, so he can discuss the good life with Peter Andre presumably.

Annoyingly the hook for 'Famous' is “When Will I Be Famous?” by greasy smug puppets Bros. Kof describes this as 'MESH' music, during his Glastonbury set on the Introducing Stage he sampled House of Pain's 'Jump Around' on the originally titled 'Jump' and hip electro douche Calvin Harris' 'Acceptable in the 80s' on '80s Baby', live this will get people going but if you keep repeating the same trick on record you sound like you have run short on ideas. Despite also borrowing the odd verse from the Pussycat Dolls' 'When I Grow Up' there is nothing truly interesting about this song, it is very much nothing to see here, move along.

Kof is attempting to mix old school samples and references with contemporary themes but it is hardly Dizzee Rascal sampling Billy Squier's 'The Big Beat' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcQYgrm6Vv0). What Kof lacks is the brains to pick a decent sample that stays true to hip hops roots. Sampling Bros is just dumb, and in a time of brainless eighties appreciation nostalgically predictable; where as 'The Big Beat' had a remarkable lineage dating back to Run DMC's 'Here We Go' and UTFO's 'Roxanne, Roxanne', sampling 'When Will I Be Famous?' is nothing but a nod to the first wave of naff boy bands.
