The Twilight Sad - I Became A Prostitute

The Twilight Sad gained quite a fair few fans with their debut album 'Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters', a collection of thunderous shoegazing anthems which infused walls of guitar noise with a keen sense of melody, bleak as fuck lyrics and climaxes which transcended the accepted sonic barriers. So there's much anticipation around their upcoming second album 'Forget the Night Ahead', and the lead single from said record, 'I Became A Prostitute' is more of the same really, another slab of dense, brooding melancholia.

This isn't to say that there are no developments in the band's sound though. Where on their debut the overdriven guitars duelled with palpitating drums for precedence, here they're noticeably more restrained, allowing James Graham's dulcet vocals to command much of the attention. His distinctive Scottish brogue is entrancing, much like Moffat or Murdoch, it's near impossible not become entirely fixated on his every word, allowing the noise to bleed in to the background before it comes thundering out of the shadows for the song's climax, completely enveloping anything in it's path. B-side 'In the Blackout' is equally as absorbing, and if the rest of the album lives up to these standards then it could be something very special.
