Archie Bronson Outfit - Shark's Tooth
Richard Wink 02/03/2010
Rating: 4/5
The debut single from Coconut sees Archie Bronson Outfit swimming in trippy waters. The sound is warped, and unsteady, blurring the non-existent line between psychedelia and new-wave. Really, it is worth the wait. Four years since the excellent Derdang Derdang, Archie Bronson have delivered something that sounds nervy, on edge, unsure, but at the same time fascinating; the bubbling guitar, the military percussion, the loops, the addictive repetition.
Though Sam Windett's lyrics are pure gibberish, the way he delivers them, as if singing through a snorkel with his head under the bath water, is bizarrely intoxicating. Though there is a heavy dose of nostalgia, the clever arrangements and quirk sustain interest.
Archie Bronson Outfit are a consistent band, they almost come with a guarantee that whatever they release won't suck. Today, in this indifferent, eclectic age such a guarantee is priceless.
