Old Man Chicago

Rating: 2.5/5
Another single taken from last year's 'Broken Side Of Time' debut album from these New York "soul-drenched rockers" (their words, not mine). There's something about it that is so quintessentially American- expressive, tight, well produced but somehow very dated. Petter Ericson Stakee has a powerful voice and dominates the overall sound, which has clearer leanings into the blues than soul. Musically, the band are more than proficient and work well as a unit, but you feel there ought to be rather more impetus than on this rather anonymous piece. It's a well enough written song, yet lacks originality and ignition for me.
It is cited as being a live favourite, and I am sure that they are a dynamic outfit on stage, having already supported both Neil Young and Them Crooked Vultures. They are currently touring the UK, so I would recommend getting to see them. On the basis of this particular tune, I struggle to recommend the album though.
