Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish

I might as well just admit it now - I love Gorillaz. However, I thought their latest album, 'Plastic Beach', was a bit inconsistent. Although it's undoubtedly their most ambitious piece of work to date, with cameo appearances from some enormous names, like Bruce Willis in the video for 'Stylo', and Snoop Dogg on 'Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach', a few of the tracks seem to lack the imagination and the quirky hooks that we've come to expect by the bucketload from Damon Albarn and co.

But 'Superfast Jellyfish' is one of the songs that gets it spot on. Featuring hip-hop group De La Soul and Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys, it boasts an impressive line up, and from the moment it kicks in with its effortlessly cool beat and menacing bass line, it's pretty clear that it's not going to disappoint. But the intro and first verse serve as a mere build up to the chorus, which, when it arrives in all it's juicy harmony-laden glory, is a nugget of pure goosebump-inducing pop bliss that's right up there with 'Feel Good Inc.' and 'Dirty Harry'. In fact, the only thing that I can find wrong with this track is that it comes in at a mere two minutes and fifty-eight seconds long.

When Gorillaz are on form, they manage to completely re-define what 'pop' is, and 'Superfast Jellyfish' does exactly this. It's catchy, it's eccentric, but, most of all, it's fan-bloody-tastic.

Out now.
