Johnny Flynn - Kentucky Pill

Harry Milburn 25/05/2010

Rating: 3/5

Johnny Flynn is clearly a master of timing. If Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and the cadre of Britain's folk musicians are still basking in the limelight of commercial success and the sunlight of longer days, then the summery sound of single 'Kentucky Pill' sees their folkster friend return just in time to join the party.

Signalling a move away from the more off-kilter sound heard on debut 'A Larum,' 'Kentucky Pill' is to be the opening track on the June-due 'Been Listening'; and whilst its Mark Ronson-ish use of labrosones, up-tempo pace and polished production have predictably been enough to seduce Radio 1 already, it's far from being bitter to swallow.

From the quirky 'Shakespeare-on-acid' lyrics to the accomplished support of 'The Sussex Wit,' all the hallmarks of 'A Larum' remain here- whilst the addition of a call-and-response style duet between Flynn and his backing band's instruments works a treat.

If Johnny Flynn has inexplicably been seen as something of an also-ran in the (still somewhat perplexingly) successful nu-folk explosion thus far, then on this evidence the forthcoming release of 'Been Listening' looks set to change all that.
