Klaxons - Atlantis To Interzone

From the ridiculous acid-house vocal sample to the multicoloured jumpers they wear whilst prancing about in the video, it's clear that Klaxons are not masters of subtlety. What they lack in restraint, though, they make up for in infectious hooks and gurning charm. Ignoring the god-awful b-side sketch '4 Horsemen Of 2012', 'Atlantis To Interzone' has recently been making Radio 1 listeners jump out of their seats and wonder what's going on. It's certainly different: Klaxons show absolutely no desire to be taken seriously or fit in with any trends and the single benefits hugely from it, as it seems to condense the band's terrifying, E-induced nightmares into a 3-minute pop song. Beginning with a cry of 'DJ!' from one of those sample keyboards you messed around on in Year 9, the opening minute of sirens, punk-funk basslines, super-fast vocals and screeching keyboards is utterly thrilling. It changes instantly into a scream-a-long which will irritate as many as it delights. But that's probably the point: nobody should go into this thinking they're witnessing an event in music history: it is simply the sound of four techno-buffoons partying like it's 1987, and it may well make you do the same.
