Tracy Chapman - Sing for you
Ash Akhtar 02/12/2008
Rating: 1/5
After a three year hiatus, the unique Tracy Chapman who once stunned the world with her eponymous debut 20 years ago returns with this middling, nothing of a song. Starting off well enough with dual acoustic guitars and piano, this 'simple tune that you can hum along to' is filled with 'doo-de-doo-doo' melodies and Dolly Parton-esque platitudes that tells us how Tracy 'used to sing for you'.
It's a distant cry from her passionate, stripped debut. Even a Beatles-esque bridge can't save this trifling blancmange of a number.
Heralding the start of a tour and new album, 'Sing for you' this does not bode well. There definitely was a time when Tracy did sing for us. But that was two decades ago.
